Coronet Peak Opening Day 2010

June 9, 2010
by Rory J

Joel from Burton hustled up a small crew, from ChCh Ben Comber (team), Jay Smith (Burton), and buddies Hannah & James. After losing a dog, blowing out a tyre, and some crusty custard treats we were off racing in two matching boy racer Subaru’s, Dr Pepper in hand, thanks to Hannah! By Tekapo Ben & Jay’s A.D.D had gotten out of hand and a play park jib was had before dark.

CP opening was ON! The weather was clear and warm meaning chalky snow & actually soft off trail, thanks to the tussock beneath. We caught up with team riders, Robett Hollis, Jamin Beattie plus there was a host of other buddy shredders there for Opening, so a great day was had jibbing around the M1.

Another vibe of the day was for the riders to try out some of the new tech happening in the Burton board line, Jamin was all over the new Whammy Bar which replaces the Dominant and has a crazy Mid Spoon skate like base, The Big Rig Robett was riding a 152 Hero wide and wheelying everywhere! Benny was pumped to finally ride his new Easy Livin 52 and like Joel & Jay was converted by the hybrid construction of Flying V; rocker flex w camber hold… Dope!

Dane Reynolds’ Spring Break Quiver

June 1, 2010
by Rory J

Super Sweet post from the CI Blog about Dane’s New Quiver. Love seeing what the uber pros ride in detail – also amped to see some more innovative tail tech coming from the brain of Dane. Can’t wait to see some footy of him riding them.

“Without a doubt, the top-tier World Championship Tour surfers go through quite a lot of surfboards, almost an entire quiver for every event. At the moment, they have a two month hiatus between World Tour events– a spring break if you will. Instead of sitting back and relaxing in their favorite recliner, they pack their bags for their favorite remote destinations to finish filming for their next big film or jump on a magazine trip to gather some photos for editorial. These trips, like the World Tour events, require a fresh, cutting edge quiver. These end up coming out a lot more diverse and experimental compared to the standard thruster quiver. It brings back a little extra creativity to their surfing and gives them the ability to draw some new lines and approach waves differently. Here’s Dane’s Spring Break quiver.

Left to right:

  1. 6′0″ x 18 3/4″ x 2 5/16″ Proton. Ordered slightly wider and shorter to work in both the pocket and smaller, flat faced waves.
  2. 6′1″ x 18 5/8″ x 2 5/16″ Rookie. Dane’s standard shortboard dimension.
  3. 6′1″ x 18 1/2″ x 2 5/16″ Proton.
  4. 5′ 7 1/2″ x 19 1/2″ x 2 5/16″ Dumpster Diver.
  5. 5′8″ x 18 1/2″ x 2 1/4″ MTF (Merrick Twin Finner). This board boasts larger side fins and a small trailing fin called “finner”.
  6. 5′ 7 1/2″ x 19 1/2″ x 2 5/16″ “El Mustachio” EPS foam and epoxy glass. When held underneath your nose, this board creates an instant disguise allowing you to blend in with the locals at many different beach breaks and points south of the California border.”

LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand (May 18, 2010) – The Burton New Zealand Snowboard Open (NZO) is pleased to announce that the 2010 event will again be hosted at Cardrona Alpine Resort in the Cardrona Valley of Wanaka NZ from August 10-14, 2010.

After a hugely successful return to Cardrona in 2009, the Burton NZ Open is set to raise the bar once again while leaving its mark on the global snowboard scene.

“We are stoked to again host the Open at such a great resort,” says event manager Reuben Yeoman. “The team at Cardrona is 100% behind this event, and their commitment to snowboarding was evident last year. The combined effort is providing riders with the facilities and formats they require to perform at their best, and it’s great to be a part of such a progressive event and global series.”

The first stop of the Burton Global Open Series and also a 5 Star event on the Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour, the Burton NZ Open will again take Wanaka and the Cardrona Valley by storm. Full event details, including a comprehensive contest and entertainment schedule will be published soon. All updates will be available on www.opensnowboarding.com, where the 2010 New Zealand Open website will launch in the coming weeks.
